Pittsburgh Chamber of Connection

A City Shaped by Place and Possibility

Pittsburgh is often called the city that built America. For more than a century, its steel mills produced the materials used to construct the nation’s bridges, railways, and skyscrapers—shaping the country’s physical infrastructure and leaving a lasting imprint on the region’s identity.

It is also famously a “city of neighborhoods,” with more than 90 communities shaped by rivers, hills, and bridges. These landscapes create strong local pride and vibrant communities, but they can also make the region feel fragmented—especially for newcomers.

As Pittsburgh has evolved from an industrial powerhouse into a hub for healthcare, education, and technology, people from across the country and world are helping shape its future. Today, the city has an opportunity to build something just as important as its historic steel legacy: the social infrastructure that helps people truly connect.

The Missing Infrastructure: Connection

Many newcomers to Pittsburgh describe a familiar pattern: the excitement of arriving followed by a “loneliness valley” as the challenge of building real relationships begins. Without long-standing local ties, finding pathways into community life can be difficult.

Research shows that strong social connections are essential infrastructure—supporting health, civic trust, and resilience. For Pittsburgh, strengthening connection is not just a social good; it is an investment in the city’s long-term vitality.

Our Vision

As a Founding Chapter of the United States Chamber of Connection, we are working to make social connection a core part of Pittsburgh’s civic infrastructure.

Pittsburgh’s many neighborhoods each bring unique strengths to the region. Our goal is to bring together leaders, organizations, and residents to strengthen relationships across communities and make it easier for people to build meaningful connections.

Using the Six Points of Connection framework, we turn connection into practical action—creating pathways for newcomers and long-time residents to build lasting relationships and contribute to the life of the city.

Pittsburgh already has the institutions, culture, and collaborative spirit to lead the way. By investing in connection now, the city can ensure people who come here don’t just stay—they truly thrive together.

Community Builder Network

It’s time to support the people who make connection possible.

We will be hosting monthly pot luck dinners for community builders to share our journeys, collaborate and learn together.

Welcome Committee Volunteers

We are recruiting volunteers from every neighborhood in the region to help steward opportunities to reconnect neighbors and strengthen communities.
