Life Transitions

One in two Americans navigated a major life transition in the last year.

They experience major changes in their identity and social support systems.

We need new infrastructure in every city to provide the social support during this transitions.

Becoming a parent. Losing a job. Retiring. Navigating a health crisis. Starting over in a new place.

These are some of the most defining moments in our lives and, increasingly, some of the most isolating.

Across these transitions, people report the same experience: a shift not just in circumstance, but in identity. Who am I now? Where do I belong? Who are “my people” in this next chapter?

Psychologists have long studied these moments of change. Research shows that life transitions create what’s often called a “fresh start effect”—a period when we are more open to forming new habits, relationships, and identities. But that openness comes with vulnerability. Without support, transitions can just as easily lead to loneliness and disconnection.

Research on Connection and Transitions

Across the country, local Chambers of Connection are building Connection Councils to develop the systems to support people in transition.

  • Conducting research on the state of connection in their city

  • Identifying the key systems needed

  • Working across sectors to design and implement change
